While photojournalism isn't something I have much experience in, with most of my journalism class being focused on the broadcast aspect of journalism, I've still had to take photos for an occasional package or web story. Once I have them, I think about which ones would be the most eye-catching and use those for my packages and web stories.
With stories such as the Cinderella story, it was important that I take pictures to bring readers to feel as if they had been to the musical themselves. The photos brought the story to life and filled the page with interesting images for readers to look at while reading. Without the pictures, that story would not have been as interesting and engaging as it was.
The photos in the weekly Song of the Week articles are the main part of the article. They are what gets everyone to want to contribute and see themselves online. While these are a little different from traditional photojournalism, they still tell a story. Each person gets to show off their favorite song and a bit of their personality. When I was gathering people to do each Song of the Week, they would get even more excited when I asked to take a photo of them. They were excited to not only have their favorite song featured in a playlist, but for their own self to be featured in an article as well.
The dance team story was one that was especially fun to gather photos for. In this specific photo, you can see Coach Aeshliman (towards the bottom left, in blue) jumping into the air with her arms raised. This was her reaction to seeing the dancers perform their first routine in an arena. Her joy captured in this photo is a perfect example of the excitement the entire dance team was feeling that day. |
